Being a pre-school teacher and leaning co-op coordinator for the last 18 years, meant I got everything that came down the pike, but, I still had to work - so I learned... Here is a very familiar conversation that those of you who know me well have heard before. I have probably said, all that I am about to share, a hundred times or more over the years to the parents of children I work with... And, sure enough, in return, I get lots of hugs from happy moms who have tried some or all of these natural remedies, because they work!!
And, here I go again for all of you...
First we use aromatherapy everyday, healthy or not... and when I worked in a school, I would use it there as well. A combo of Tea Tree, Eucalyptus, Lavender and Peppermint directly on your pillow at night, or in a diffuser and when you feel something coming on, in a humidifier is best. Keep the humidifier going, throughout the sickness, day and night, in whatever room you are in. The idea is to break up the mucus and get the vapors inside you to push out all the yucky! You can also carry a tissue around with the oils and breathe it in regularly. I have a locket necklace with holes that I put aromatherapy cotton in. And, for the wee little in our life I put some drops directly on their collars.
Next, we swear by probiotics and mega doses of them! We eat raw fermented foods and drink Kombucha Tea, and when sicknesses comes, no matter what it is, we up or probiotic capsules to five a day, and continue for three weeks, even if we feel better. Everyone in the house sick or not ups the probitoics -for preventive measures! The idea is you don't want to keep passing it around, and around, and around, through the family.
If I had to choose one internal remedy it would be Wellness Shots! I always have them or all the ingredients in them on hand. I either make a blend using the ingredients or as my daughter will tell you, I make her take them separately, in droppers, directly under her tongue. :-( Poor girl, LOL, the other day when I gave some to her, she refused to take grape seed extract on it's own ever again! Something about foam in her mouth... so blending is best! LOL...

Along with Wellness Shots we eat garlic, I put it into everything I can that we are eating. And, I also cut the garlic into child's size- little pill like pieces and the kids swallow the little chunks whole like they were taking a pill.
We love raw, organic green smoothies for all their health wonderfulness too!
Remember most over the counter traditional medicines like cough medicine, or NyQuill, etc... suppress symptoms, they don't help heal... suppressing symptoms keeps all the yucky inside and then the bug lingers longer, it's just easier to get through your day sometimes taking them. In my world, I am not interested in just getting through the day by suppressing. The aromatherapy, herbs and probiotics make the days easier, and the knowing that it will pass through faster, works for me... so we do everything we can to support the body's natural ability to fight sickness.
Allowing fever is something we consider. We only choose Tylenol and such, when the fever is dangerously high. Fever is natures way of healing, cleansing and helps to make your immune systems stronger. I use aromatherapy compresses to make us more comfortable. Creating opportunities to go to the bathroom, or allowing the body to vomit if necessary is part of the plan as well.
Helping the body to drain using aromatherapy steam or a natural herbal decongestant
along with a Mullein and garlic oil blend for the ears.
And, to release congestion, along with a good back or chest massage, a cupped hand- light pounding a few times a day, is great!
The idea is to make sure lots of tissues are required as your body gets better.
As soon as we start getting congested we take out our Netti Pot. A quick Google search will show that ear, nose, and throat surgeons recommend nasal irrigation. We use the Neti when sinus symptoms from bacterial infections, allergies, and environmental irritants surface, to alleviate congestion, facial pain and pressure, and reduce the need for antibiotics and nasal sprays.
Keeping your immune system strong when you are not sick goes a long way too.. Night shade veggies, herbs and spices, fruit full of vitamin c,along with 6ooo mg vitamin D is a must. Include 3000mg fish oils, a multi vitamin and probiotics too!
Nature intends for our littles (and their parents) to get viruses and bacterial bugs, the positive is, doing so helps build up their immune system, so having a little person in the house brings with it everything that comes down the pike...
Just switching to some of nature's remedies makes managing our sickness a little different but, you just may find it is more pleasant to go through and they really work!!
My hope is that these natural medicine cabinet remedies, that are constants in our life, help in keeping you and your loved ones healthy! :-)
